30 day manga challenge: Day 8

A manga you feel embarrassed about liking

Scum's Wish Vol. 8

Rating: 10/10

Unrequited love is a tragic circumstance with no simple resolution. It comes in many forms, yet each one shares the same debilitating feeling of inconceivable longing.

Hanabi Yasuraoka and Mugi Awaya are two high school students who appear to have the ideal relationship. They are the envy of their classmates, and it is easy to portray them as the classic example of high school sweethearts. Unbeknownst to friends and family, however, there is a side to their love veiled by hidden passions: their true affections lie elsewhere, and they use each other to physically sate their unreciprocated feelings.

Hanabi is in love with Narumi Kanai, her new homeroom teacher who is also her childhood friend. Mugi is in love with Akane Minagawa, who used to be his tutor when he was younger. Now teachers at the same school, Kanai and Minagawa begin to show an interest in one another. As a result, Mugi and Hanabi find solace in each other as victims of the same pain.

With little hope of their feelings being realized, these two students face a challenging predicament: cope with and move on from their lust, or become further entangled in their web of unrequited love.

Scum’s wish. First of all I loved it, from the start to end. I read the manga and watched the anime, I got to say the anime wasn’t the best but the manga is seriously good. The reason why I’m embarrassed is because not a lot of people liked it. If you look at the MAL rating, it tells you that it’s not the best manga to read and that may be right. This manga is not for everyone. The story kinda takes weird turns at weird times and that is not a pleasant read to most people however I liked it. Why? I don’t know it just appealed to me.

This story is one of those “I hate but love it” kinda stories. It never showcases true love but the ugly sides of love and it also shows us that fate is not meant for some people. So why should you read this? Because it’s different from all the other slice of life mangas. At first I was weirded out by the extreme plot this manga had but as the chapters passed it was awesome, just kidding it’s weird till the end. Even with all it’s hateful parts it’s still entertaining(maybe). And this manga showcases that relationships are not always happy. The ending may hurt a bit but it’s so good.

It’s not the best romance manga but definitely worth a shot.

  1. I haven’t read the manga but I have seen the anime and I can see why it can be difficult to digest. We are so used to cliche romcom anime that it’s hard to watch or read about toxic relationships that actually happens in real life. After all manga and anime are a source of escapism for us. I really enjoyed it though. It was a good coming of age story.
